Trimsaran 40-5 Penybanc

Trimsaran welcomed bottom side Penybanc to Caeffair last friday night. With a decent crowd watching Trim were hoping to impress and get back to winning ways after defeat to Nantgaredig the weekend before.

Trim controlled possession and territory for much of the first half with Penybancs discipline costing them whenever they had territory and with a dominant set piece the green and blacks scored an early try from a maul through Steffan Roberts. Although the green and blacks were controlling the game Penybancs defence held firm and held out numerous Trimsaran attacks. Penybanc tried to break out from their own 22 through big ball carries but handling errors and turnovers meant they were stuck in their half for long periods of the first half. Trim had a scrum 10 meters out and went on a push which led to a penalty try being awarded. Trim looked to add to their score before half time but were unsuccessful. the half time score was Trimsaran 12-0 Penybanc. The Tigers defence was holding strong and this wasnt easy for Trim.

Second half started a similar way with Trim dominating early on and scoring another try through Steff Roberts to take the score 19-0 with outside half Corey Phillips successfully converting the try, Penybanc woke up a bit now and had a successful 10 minute period where they were pushing for a try themselves. Driving through their forwards they eventually got over for their opening try with 20 minutes left on the clock. From the kick off Trim regained possession but with Penybancs defence holding them out the all important 4th try was struggling to come. It took its time but with only 10 minutes left Steff Roberts went over for his hatrick after a strong carry and his teams 4th try. The touchline conversion was again successful from Corey Phillips and the score was 26-5 with 9 minutes to play. From the kick off a superb break down field by prop Iwan Green and a pass inside to centre Rhys Evans saw him touch down for the 5th try of the evening for the home side. Score now was 33-5 with the 2 points added by Corey Phillips. Penybanc had a period of possession and territory now for the final 5 minutes but some strong defence held them up over the line and then a drive off the following scrum 5 allowed Trim the chance to clear their lines from the resulting penalty. Approaching the final minute there was one final dash downfield from Trim and flanker Nathan Jones capped off a well worked try to leave the final scoreline 40-5 to Trimsaran.

Thanks to 3 tries in the final 10 minutes Trim recorded a 40-5 victory but it was not as easy as the scoreline suggests with Penybanc making Trim work hard for each of their tries. We wish Penybanc all the best for the remainder of this season!
