Trimsaran welcomed Llandybie to Caeffair last weekend looking to keep their position at the top of the league. The visitors are currently placed 11th in the league but had been involved in a lot of close matches where they had narrowly lost. Once again the rain made an appearance so conditions wernt the best.
Within 2 minutes it was the visitors who took a 3-0 lead through an early penalty. It was a back and forth encounter with Llanybie proving to be a real threat at times but Trim levelled the score 3-3 thanks to a Corey Phillips penalty for offside. It wasn’t long until Llandybie had another opportunity to extend their lead but the penalty was missed, this did lead to the first try of the game though as from the dropout the visitors carried well and their hooker got through a ruck meters out and went over the posts for the first try of the game and with the conversion successful it was 10-3 with 30 minutes gone. Llandybie kicked the ball through and nearly got their second try of the game but the ball had gone dead before it was grounded. Trim secured territory from the drop out and showed their intention with a some good movement and moving the ball wide but Llandybies defence wasn’t giving in and they held the green and blacks out. There was an unfortunate injury to a Llandybie and there was a long delay as both first aiders from both teams and 2 of the Trim paramedic players attended to the injured player. As the player was carried off the field on a stretcher to a standing ovation from both sets of players and supporters the game was reset with a scrum 5 to Trimsaran as they were in possession before the referee blew up. With only 2 minutes left Trim knew they had to get some sort of score from this period of pressure. The scrum was reset a couple of times before the Trimsaran forwards attempted a pushover try , number 8 Steffan Roberts looked to have grounded against the posts but there was to many bodies in the way for the referee to see and he blew up for one last scrum before half time. From the resulting scrum Trim again applied pressure and the ball was released to the backs and centre Thomas Bonnell burst through from meters out to score the try which with the successful conversion by Corey Phillips would see Trim level 10-10 at the break. The referee showed a yellow card to one Llandybie player and Trimsaran captain Ryan Edwards for a scuffle after the try was scored.
A tough first half with Llandybie proving to be tough to crack and disrupting the breakdown so Trim couldn’t get quick ball away.
Trim kicked off the second half playing down towards Ffos Las. Applying early pressure to the visitors but unable to get the break through against some strong defence. Llandybie had some good possession and territory themselves but Trims defence was proving strong also. Trim had a penalty with 25 minutes left to go which was converted by Corey Phillips to give Trim the lead for the first time in the match 13-10. Llandybie had a penalty and a great kick by their outside half seen them deep in the Trimsaran 22 and looking to hit back and take a crucial lead. Llandybie pressured the green and blacks defence and were nearly over the line but a superb tackle by Trimsaran drove them back 5 yards and another great tackle drove them back even further before they knocked the ball on. From the resulting scrum Trim had a penalty and now it was them who were pressuring Llandybie. The pressure paid off with some lovely hands shown by Trimsaran with backs and forwards putting some lovely passing together and centre Thomas Bonnell went through and scored his and Trims 2nd try with 10 minutes remaining. The conversion was unsuccessful but this was the start of a rollercoaster 5 minutes for Trim. From the kick off the ball was retained by the green and blacks and a pop inside to number 8 Steffan Roberts seen him make a superb run and get into the Llandybie 10 yard when he passed it inside to scrum half Ioan Jones who crossed for Trims 3rd try of the game. Conversion was successful and the score was now 25-10. 5 minutes remaining and Trim wernt taking any risks and cleared their lines. Llandybie had a lineout in their half which was turned over by Trim. Some good football skills shown by flanker Nathan Jones seen him chip it through from the turnover and pounce on the ball to score Trims 4th try of the game and secure an all important bonus point for Trim. Corey was successful with the conversion again and the score was now 32-10. This was how it stayed for the final few minutes. A superb 5 minutes from Trim seen them take the game away from Llandybie which was probably not a true reflection on the game as Llandybie were tough opponents and were in the game until the final 10 minutes.
This win keeps Trim top of the league with 9 games played. Our next game is on 7th December when we travel to Betws for another tough game.
Thank you to all our supporters that came out in the rain on Saturday, we appreciate your support.
