Trimsaran 17-18 Nantgaredig

Trimsaran welcomed league leaders and undefeated Nantgaredig to caeffair on Saturday afternoon. Trims only league defeat this season came against Nant in November. This game was certain to be an exciting one and it certainly didn't disappoint, played in front of a big vocal crowd in Trim it was the visitors who struck first to take an early 3-0 lead from a penalty. Trim started to control possession and territory and scored the first try of the game through winger Dan Griffiths after some good interplay between the forwards and backs spreading the ball out wide. From the kick off a loose kick from the green and blacks led to Nants first try as they broke down the wing and retook the lead and with a successful conversion led 10-5. Trim dominated the set piece and won a few scrum penalties but silly errors led to nant applying the pressure and they wernt afraid to throw the ball around from anywhere on the field. a break downfield and a simple 2 on 1 saw the visitors cross for their 2nd try. This time the touchline conversion wasn't successful and the score was 15-5 to Nant. Trim struggled to get field position with Nants quick line speed causing the home side problems and ill discipline saw continuous penalties go against them which gifted field position to the visitors. They had another penalty to extend their lead to 18-5 at half time.

A back and forth first half but with the wind behind them Trim would have been hoping to get back into the game.

Nant kicked off the second half and it was them who applied the pressure for the opening 10 minutes but some strong defence from the green and blacks kept them out. Strangely from a penalty infront of the posts the visitors opted for a scrum and this aidedTrim in scoring their first try of the second half after a drive to put pressure on Nants scrum meant they flung the ball out and the Trim defence kept them out before full back Rhys Evans intercepted in his own 22, running nearly the full length of the field but with covering defence coming he put in a clever chip forward for winger Dan Morgan to touch down and with Dan Griffiths adding the conversion it was game on with 20 minutes left with the score 12-18 to Nant. Nant were left ruing not taking the points now as Trim were in the game, a strong driving maul up field led to a 30 yard gain and another penalty as Nant illegally pulled the maul down. Trim were 10 yards out and tried driving their way over but Nant held them out but with the green and blacks still in possession a chip through from Steff Roberts led to winger Callum McCormack scoring his teams 3rd try in the corner. A difficult conversion was missed and Trim were still behind by a point but very much in the game with 9 minutes left. The remaining 9 minutes saw both teams go through their phases but when Trim were on the attack in key areas Nant turned over the possession to nullify the threat. In the last play of the game the referee awarded a penalty to Nant for a no arm tackle and they booted the ball off the field to claim a victory which extended their lead over Trim to 16 points and kept their unbeaten run going.

It was a fantastic back and forth game which was also the feature game on deadballine this week and it certainly didn't disappoint the big crowd in attendance with many highly praising both teams and the excitement of the game. A big thank you to Deadballine for coming to our game and giving the local game some much needed publicity!
