Trimsaran 18-3 Amman United

Trimsaran welcomed top of the table Amman United to Caeffair on Saturday for the 2nd time in 6 weeks. Amman United run out comfortable winners 6 weeks ago when they won 29-7 in the first round of the National Bowl.

Trim were hugely disappointing in that game as Amman controlled every aspect of play and there was no doubt Amman deserved victory that day.

There was a minute silence held for Dorian Edwards and Remembrance Sunday before the game, which was respectfully done by both teams, the ref and both sets of supporters.

With the rain coming down there was a decent crowd watching with some  Amman United supporters also making the journey. Trim kicked the game off and within 5 minutes Trim scored the first try of the with the luck of the ball after a good break and chip forward from full back Rhys Evans seen him regather the ball and break to the tryline for an early score, the conversion was successful from Corey Phillips and Trim were up 7-0 early on.

A mistake from the following kick off left Amman with possession in the Trim 22 and it was them who were awarded a penalty which they slotted over to make the score 7-3.

Trim were next to score after getting a penalty for offside and Corey Phillips slotted it over to make the score 10-3.

Amman started to build pressure now and were awarded a penalty to get them inside the Trimsaran 22, from the lineout they were awarded another penalty but instead of going for the posts as anticipated they decided to go for a scrum. Trim applied pressure to the scrum but Amman got the ball away quick, the green and black wall wasn’t going to let Amman through easily though after some strong defence. It was then another penalty was awarded to the visitors where they again went for a scrum but a nudge from Trim led to them knocking the ball on at the back of the scrum and Trim clearing their lines to a loud roar from the home support. During this time Amman were down to 14 men for 10 minutes after an attempted headbutt from their second row that the ref deemed only a yellow was necessary as he didn’t connect with the attempt.

As the game continued, Amman were soon awarded another penalty and this time opted to go for posts but the attempt was missed and Trim cleared from the 22 drop out to the halfway line and managed to relieve the pressure on their line.

In a case of déjà vu Amman had a penalty from a lineout and again opted for posts but a 2nd attempt in quick succession was missed to leave the score 10-3.

Trim had a period of possession and territory now and unfortunately Corey Phillips missed a difficult penalty. It wasn’t long though until he had the chance again and he slotted another penalty over to make the score 13-3 at half time.

An impressive first half from the green and blacks with all 15 players on the field putting in impressive performances both in defence and attack and after a sustained period of pressure from Amman for about 15 minutes where they came back scoreless.

Amman kicked off the second half with Trim playing towards the old cricket pitch. Amman had an early opportunity to kick 3 points in the second half but it was another missed attempt from the visitors allowing Trim to clear their lines.

Trim managed to break from their own 22 and with some good carrying by both forwards and backs it was their turn to have a penalty attempt from the halfway line which didn’t quite have the legs from Phillips. This did lead to the beginning of a 15 minute period where Trimsaran were camped in the Amman 22. Trim had a lineout 10 yards out and just as the maul was set up a knock on occurred at the back which allowed Amman to have the scrum. The Trim pack were confident and drove Amman back of their ball and the ref had no option but to give Trim the penalty. Opting to kick to touch from the resulting lineout Trim drove a maul over the visitors tryline to score their second try of the game through captain Ryan Edwards.

The score was 18-3 with 12 minutes left. Amman are capable from striking from anywhere though and the home team knew they couldn’t take their foot off the gas. Again with some fantastic defence Trim held out for the remainder of the game and denied Amman any match points from the game which takes the green and blacks back to top spot. With conditions difficult there was a lot of mistakes from both sides and a lot of breaks in play but it was a physical battle and one which Trim deserved to win with a fantastic defensive performance.

Amman have 2 games in hand on Trim and are only 3 points behind but for the time being its Trim that sit top of the league until next weekend atleast when we make the tough journey to Llangadog, always a tough game up there.

Thank you to all supporters who turned up in the weather to support the boys, your support is greatly appreciated.
