Trimsaran 10-17 Furnace

A big crowd greeted both teams as Trimsaran welcome Furnace for a festive local derby in a top of the table league clash.

Furnace started the brighter of the both teams and spent the first 10 minutes on the attack in the Trim half, they were rewarded with a penalty which was struck from near the 10 yard line and they went ahead 3-0. It was Trims turn now as they went on the attack and they themselves were awarded a penalty which was put over by Corey Phillips. In a back and forth match it was Furnace who again took the lead with another penalty to go up 6-3 before Trim had a long period of pressure in the Furnace half and after getting on top in the scrums from a 5 yard penalty the green and blacks opted for a scrum. Looking to drive over the scrum went down again and another penalty was being played to Trim but they didnt need it as after a couple of pick and gos prop Josh Daniels touched down for the first try of the game and with the conversion successful by Corey Phillips Trim now ahd the lead for the first time by 10-6 with 5 minutes of the first half remaining. Discipline was once again turning into an issue for Trim with Furnace reducing the deficit just before half time to 1 point with another well struck penalty. They would have taken the lead with this penalty but they had missed their previous attempt.

Half time score was 10-9 to Trim and the green and blacks had a lot of work to do to secure a win.

Trim controlled much of the possession and territory in the second half but the cherries had some strong defence which led Trim to making simple mistakes due to the stubborn cherry defence. Trim did have 2 quick successive penalty attempts at goal but both were just shy of the target. With there only being 1 point in the game with it approaching the final 10 minutes there was always a chance that the next score could prove decisive. So it proved as again discipline from Trim gifted Furnace key possession and territory. In a tackle 5 yards out from the Trim tryline there was a knock on in the tackle. From the scrum Trim put the shove on but the Cherries managed to get the ball away and their winger dotted down in the corner with 9 minutes remaining! the conversion was missed but Furnace were leading 14-10 with the clock ticking down. Trim knew that they had to buck their ideas up or there was a defeat staring at them. Trim chipped the ball through and when Furnace cleared it the chasing Trim defender took the Furnace player out and the ref awarded Furnace another penalty just inside the Trim half which was missed. 6 minutes remaining and Furnace were awarded another penalty by the referee in a similar position about 5 yards closer to the posts after a scuffle broke out between both teams. Furnace didnt miss with attempt and were now leading 17-10. Trim had one final chance to get a draw when Furnace give successive penalties away and Trim were on the attack in the Furnace 22. Trim drove well with their forwards and were making good yards with each carry. an offload in a tackle was knocked on though with the tryline only yards away and that signalled the end of the game! The Cherries had won 17-10 in Caeffair to the delight of their travelling fans and to the despair of the home fans. A tough derby game was always expected and Furnace were deserved winners but the Green and Blacks wont be happy with their performance and discipline once again not helping matters!  Next week we travel to New Dock Stars for another derby game!

Thank you to all fans that came to support today , it was great to see a big crowd there for this game!
