Trimsaran travelled to Tylorstown in the National Bowl 3rd round on Saturday 27th October. Both teams were placed 3rd in their respective leagues but Trim had won 5 from 5 in the league whilst Tylorstown had tasted defeat twice away from home in the league. Tylorstown haven't lost at home since March 2016 and Trim would have been hoping to end this remarkable run.
Backed by a big crowd Tylorstown kicked off and regained possession from the kick off but some strong defence led to a Trimsaran penalty which allowed them to clear their lines. This led to a further penalty for offside and Trim took an early 3-0 lead through the boot of Rhodri Mason much to the delight of the large Trimsaran supporters present. Again from the kick off Tylorstown managed to regain possession but a handling error allowed trim to make a break. Deep in the home half but up against some strong defence Trimsaran managed to make a break down the wing through Thomas Bonnell who was just short from regathering his chip through but a scrum five was awarded to the visitors. A strong second shove from Tylorstown seen trim knock on at the base of the scrum and a missed oppurtunity for the green and blacks.
It was Trimsaran who scored the next points however again through the boot of Mason to lead 6-0.
It was another Trim mistake at the kick off which left Tylorstown in possession. After a few phases Trim thought they'd turned the ball over but we're brought back for an offside. Tylorstown kicked to touch and Trim were preparing for an onslaught from their hosts . They didnt disappoint and after a few phases the home team scored the first try of the game . The conversion was missed however and Trim were still in the lead by 6-5. It was trims turn to trouble the kick off now and the green and blacks regathered possession. The game had high intensity and with the green and blacks again pushing for a try a good counter ruck from the hosts on their 5 yard line let to a change of possession. A superb break from one of the Tylorstown backs seen the game turn and they were now attacking on the Trimsaran 5 yard line instead of defending their own , the retreating defence conceded a professional foul as tylorstown looked to spread the ball across the line and Trimsarans Dan Griffiths ended up in the sin bin. Tylorstown took the points and were leading for the first time by 8-6.
The game went back and fourth until Trimsaran had a penalty and opted to go for touch. From the lineout the visitors set up a rolling maul and scored their first try of the game as they crossed in the corner. The conversion was unsuccessful but with half-time approaching Trim were leading 14-8.
There was still time for another twist as yet another kick off troubled the visitors and although it didnt travel the 10 metres trim played it and Tylorstown turned it over. Eventhough the green and blacks held them out for a few phases they managed to burst through under the posts to take a 15-14 half time lead.
Tylorstown would have been the happier team at half time as although they had a few chances to score if it wasn't for a couple of forward passes and looked dangerous, Trimsaran left a few golden oppurtunitues out on the pitch after losing possession in key areas.
Trimsaran kicked the 2nd half off but it was Tylorstown who would score the first try of the 2nd half after a nice break, a few phases later they found themselves crossing the whitewash, the conversion was missed however and this left the score at 20-14 so Trim were still in within a converted try. Trim were looking at getting back into the game. After 5 consecutive penalties after the green and blacks set up dangerous looing rolling mauls the ref give Tylorstown a final warning and Trim opted for the posts to cut the lead to 3 points and with their tails up Tirm would have been looking to score next. Tylorstown kciked a penalty into the corner from halfway and it was their turn to set up a rolling maul, Superb defence fom Trim saw the maul brought down a couple of meters short, the ref had his hand out for advantage and penalised trim for slowing the ball down, the ref didnt hesitate and give a straight yellow card to prop Josh Daniels which considering ti was only Trims first offence on their line and Tylorstown had committed 5 penalties on their line previously without a card the travelling support was baffled that a card was shown after 1 penalty. Tylorstown took advantage and extended their lead with a 4th try (27-17). Tylorstown again found themselves attacking as ill discipline seemed to be getting the better for Trim and with only 15 minutes remaining the home side opted to kick for posts from the penalty and with time running out and the score 30-17 Trim needed to score 2 tries to get back into position to qualify for the next round. This did kick Trim into action and for the remainder of the game it was spent with trim pushing in the Tylorstown half for points that they badly needed, handling errors and some superb defence from Tylorstown meant no more points were scored and Trim fell short in their quest to progress to the next round.
Although disappointed with the result as the game could have gone either way, Trimsaran lost to a good Tylorstown team who could well go to the latter stages of the competition
