Trimsaran 27-5 Laugharne

Trimsaran welcomed Laugharne to Caeffair in the 2nd round of the National Bowl. With both teams unbeaten in their opening couple of games in their respective leagues something had to give. With a number of unavailable players Trimsaran made 6 changes to their starting line-up for the game and were only able to name 2 subs.

Trim started the stronger and had continuous pressure in the Laugharne 22 for the opening 10 minutes but were unable to make the pressure count as Laugharne turned over a number of lineouts and cleared their lines with some strong defence. 2 quick penalties to the visitors allowed them to now get key possession and territory. It was now their turn to apply pressure to the home team and some big up tackling enabled Trimsaran to clear their lines.

With speedster Dan Griffiths in fine form Trimsaran took the lead with a fantastic try which was started in their own 22 and some great feet and speed got Dan the opening score.

Within the space of 10 minutes both prop Iwan Green and prop cover Ricky King got injured and had to leave field which meant Trim had to go to passive scrums with nomore front row available and see the remaining 55 minutes of the game out with 14 players on the field as under the new wru rules if passive scrums are called thenthe team that opts for them must play with 14 players.

If the green and blacks were to stay in contention for the rest of the game it needed to be a huge performance from the 14 boys on the field. Not only did they deliver a huge performance but they done it in style. Scoring again before the half time whistle to take a 10-0 lead at the break.

With the wind behind their backs Laugharne would have been confident of getting some points in the second half. Again though some massive defence from Trimsaran kept the visitors out and with the wave of green and black in their faces errors started to creep into their game. After 15 minutes of the second half Trim didn't leave their half of the field and although it was totally against the run of play when they scored their 3rd try of the game to lead by 15-0 with 25 minutes remaining it was nothing more than the 14 men who were not giving up hope deserved. Trims attack was looking dangerous and when Shawn Kirk made a break in the visitors 22 and slipped a pass inside tk scrum half Yogi Bach who went over for the 4th try of the game surely it was game over with the first successful conversion leaving the score 22-0 with 12 minutes to play.

Full credit to Laugharne for not giving up and throwing everything at the Trimsaran defence. Using their big players to try and get over the gain line but the green and black wall wasn't ready to give in. Laugharne had another penalty and after a few phases of play in the Trimsaran 22 they finally had their first try in the corner but all hope was gone for a miraculous comeback with only 5 minutes remaining. From the kick off Trim regained possession and once again some great play between the backs and forwards seen the green and blacks score their 5th try of the game.

Full time score - Trimsaran 27-5 Laugharne

After going down to 14 men not many would have expected Trim to put in the performance that they did which secured their route to the 3rd round of the National Bowl. The draw for the 3rd round will be made this week on Tuesday/Wednesday.
