Trimsaran opened up their 2018/2019 league campaign away to Llandybie. Both games between the teams last year went Llandybies way but Trimsaran had 2 Losing Bonus Points in both games.
With a great crowd watching the game and a fair few away supporters supporting the green and blacks the game kicked off. It wasn't long until the first penalty was awarded to Llandybie and they opted for goal . The kick was missed and Trim capitalised on this when a move from deep inside their 22 ended with winger Dan Griff speeding past the covering defence and then backing himself and cutting inside the last defender to score under the posts. He converted his own try and the visitors led 7-0. As the game went on both teams tried to play decent rugby but strong defence from both sides and some basic errors meant no more points were scored. With 10 minutes left in the 1st half Dan Griffiths slotted 2 penalties and Llandybie slotted 1 to leave the score 13-3 with half time fast approaching. Trimsaran flanker Nathan Jones was held up over the line and from the following scrum were awarded a penalty. Backing themselves the green and blacks again went for a scrum but we're again met by some strong Llandybie defence and the half time whistle was blown by the referee.
Trim were preparing themselves from an onslaught from the home team in the 2nd half and they didn't disappoint. For much of the second half Llandybie controlled the game and pushed for a score that would bring them back into the game but the green and blacks wernt prepared to give up easily and with some superb tackling and counter attacking it took Llandybie until the 65th minute to get over for their first score when a good offload on the floor allowed their second row to stretch over. The conversion was successful and it was now a 3 point game with just under 15 minutes remaining. The pressure was most definitely on the visitors now as a few penalties were going the home teams way and gifting them key field positions. Again though as it had for most of the game the boys held firm in defence and were making key turnovers. Llandybie turned down the oppurtunity to take 3 points and level the scores and go for touch. The defining moment came with 5 minutes left when winger Dan Griff got tackled after making a break, he popped the ball to scrum half Yogi Bach and with a defender drifting across a pass to full back Rhys Evans saw him race to the whitewash. Although the conversion was wide Trim were leading 18-10 with 3 and a half minutes to go. Although there was time left for Llandybie to get 2 scores , the score by trim left the home team deflated and the mistakes meant a flat end to the game but Trimsaran and their supporters celebrated a fantastic opening day victory. Thank you to all who came and supported the boys , it was great to see a big number of Trimsaran followers there.
