Trimsaran 12-8 Lampeter

Trimsaran welcomed Lampeter to Caeffair Saturday with Trim currently 3rd in the league and Lampeter 9th.

Lampeter have proved to be a big of a bogey team for Trim the last few seasons and last season Lampeter had a comfortable bonus point victory in Trim. However this season Trim have had a good start having won 9 out of the opening 10 league games. Lampeter on the other hand have only won 4 out of their opening 12 games.

Trim opened the scoring after 5 minutes with a wonderful try scored after winger Dan Griffiths broke up the wing and a great switch with Rhys Evans saw the full back cross the whitewash for the opening score. With the conversion successful Trim led 7-0 after 5 minutes. The last few games the Green and Blacks have had a poor opening to games but they clicked for the opening 10 minutes and continued to apply pressure but couldn't get through a tough visiting defence. That was as good as it got for Trim though as again for the 3rd game in a row ill discipline was costing the boys in decent field positions and gifting possession and territory to Llanbed.  To the visitors credit though they were making things tough for Trim with great control by their backs and pressure. Lampeter almost crossed for their first try but lost the fall. The ref came back for a penalty in front of the posts and the visitors took the points. 7-3 after 20 minutes.

Lampeter wernt taking their foot off the gas and continued to make yards and apply pressure. Making yards up the field. When awarded another penalty they went for touch and had the ball 10 meters out. After a few phases and good ball retention the visitors scored their first try after some good footwork from the Lampeter player as he got through 3 Trim defenders. Conversion was missed and the score was 8-7. After being on the backfoot for the majority of the first half and not having any possession after controlling the opening 10 minutes Trim did have some territory but couldn't get any points against a strong defence.

Half time score - Trimsaran 7-8 Lampeter.

The second half was similar to the first with Trim conceding a number of penalties again and Lampeter had no problem in booting the ball deep into the home teams territory. It was only some strong defence from Trim which kept them in the game with Lampeter dominating much of the territory and possession and gaining yards through their big ball carriers .  When Trim did manage to get into Lampeter territory with some turnover ball and a couple of penalties of their own there was error after error which enabled Lampeter to clear their lines without any real threat. The game remained scoreless in the 2nd half with both teams defences difficult to break down and Lampeter looking the likely team to score and secure what would have been a deserved victory.

With 4 minutes left Trim had a scrum near the 10 yard line in their half. With the ball secured the green and blacks opted to kick the ball into Lampater territory, this worked out fantastically with Rhys Evans managing to collect the ball and score his and his teams second try of the game! In the lead with only 3 minutes remaining Trim were desperate to secure the kick off and see the game out but another error from the restart gifted possession back to the visitors and they were to apply the pressure for the remainder of the game. The home teams defence was staying strong only for a penalty to go the visitors way and with them to boot the ball a couple of yards away from the try line it give them one last chance to snatch a victory. The Trim pack defended well against the maul that set and after a couple of phases the pressure on the visitors attack told and a knock on give Trim the victory! It was a victory that probably wasn't deserved but for some great defence and some great never say die attitude which keeps us 3rd in the league. Full credit to Lampeter for providing a tough test.

Next week we travel the short distance to Bynea.
